Kicking the teenage habit

• Adults - especially parents and family members - should set an example by not smoking.

• Point-of-sale tobacco ads from shops should be banned.

• Shop staff should be vigilant in checking IDs to prevent sales to underage smokers.

• Smoking should have a smaller role in popular culture, including movies and television programmes.

•  Ireland should implement a large-scale aggressive media campaign to show the dangers of smoking and reveal the motives of big tobacco companies

• Best-practice strategies should be adapted from other countries that have successfully reduced smoking rates.
