A manufacturing plant employing 50 people in Co Kildare will close next year, trade union Siptu said.

The union said it was informed today at a meeting with management that Well Screen Technologies (WST) would close its plant in Celbridge next summer.

The plant manufactures drilling equipment for the oil industry.

Siptu official Adrian Kane said the workforce was “genuinely devastated".

"Despite a huge increase of redundancies in recent months it was widely believed that the [plant] was safe," he said.

Mr Kane claimed the plant was "busier than ever" and had a full order book and "record profits".

“The company is moving most of the production at the facility in Celbridge to an existing site in Cyprus. There was no consultation with the workforce whatsoever before the announcement this week.

Mr Kane said immediate action had to be taken by employers, trade unions and the Government in order to stop the loss of jobs.

"Siptu has commenced negotiations with the company over severance terms. These negotiations are likely to continue over the coming weeks.”
