There were few surprises with all three sitting TDs retaining their seats.
Polling just over 50 per cent of the vote, the two Fianna Fáil candidates, Seán Power and Sean Ó Fearghail, were both elected on the first count having exceeded the quota.
Ó Fearghail topped the poll with 8,731 votes, which meant he had a surplus of 94.
He was closely followed by Power, who crept over the line with 8,694, a surplus of just 46 votes.
Independent candidate Tom Doyle and Jane Mullins of the Progressive Democrats were both eliminated on the first count.
Green Party candidate JJ Power was eliminated on the second count with most of his surplus going to Labour candidate Jack Wall.
Outgoing TD Wall, who received 7,154 first-preference votes, was elected on the third count, following the distribution of the three eliminated candidates.
Confirmation of Wall's election meant that Fine Gael candidates Richard Daly and Alan Gillis had failed to retain the seat lost by former party leader Alan Duke in the 2002 election.
Although it was a protracted first count, there was little excitement at the count centre in Newbridge.
This was probably to do with the fact that from early morning, it was quite obvious that the three sitting TDs would be returned to represent Kildare South in the 30th Dáil.
However, people had to wait until just after 5.30pm to hear returning officer Charlie Talbot announce the results of the first count. The count, held in the Ryston Sports and Social Club, ended just before 8pm and it was then the real celebrations began.
