Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey has ended months of speculation by announcing that he has retired from the inter-county game.
The 35-year-old has won five All-Ireland medals and nine All-Star awards in his time in a Kilkenny jersey. He told manager Brian Cody of his intentions on Tuesday before the breaking the news publically in his weekly column in the Kilkenny Voice.
Carey waited until after a few rounds of the local league to see how he felt about continuing at inter-county level before deciding now was the right time to quit.
He still intends to keep playing for his club Gowran.
