Freshford has conkered the world. The busy little village eight miles from Kilkenny city has hardly had time to catch its breath since local man Eamon Dooley smashed his way to a world record at the weekend.
Competing for the first time at the World Conker Championships outside Peterborough in England, he broke an astonishing 306 conkers in one hour to earn his place in the Guinness Book of Records.
The 29-year-old was one of a team of four to represent Ireland in the event.
He was a late replacement for the current Irish number one conker player, Kilkenny man Liam Barnaville, who was at a wedding on Saturday.
Mr Barnaville flew out on Sunday to join team mates Joe Dermody, Brendan Bowden, Grace Kearney and Mr Dooley.
Eamon will be hoping to crown a great eight days by winning the Irish Conker Championships in his home village this weekend.
He will compete with hundreds in a sport which has captured the imagination of the local public.
Freshford National School is expected to present the organisers with around 30,000 conkers for the event on Sunday.
The children have been busy collecting conkers since they returned from their summer holidays.
"Everybody has just gone conker mad," one of the organisers, Grace Kearney, said.
Thousands of people are expected to descend on the village for the event.
And if you look for "Tarzan" in Freshford this weekend, you will be sent to Ballyroe, outside the village where local man Michael Crosby is known affectionately as "Tarzan". He has been in strict training for the championships for a number of weeks and will be hoping to relieve Mr Barnaville of his All-Ireland crown.
The action starts at noon.
