Kilkenny to fight for their image rights

Kilkenny are gearing up for their first battle over copyright infringement and are prepared to take the fight to the courts.

The county board was annoyed when pictures of their senior and under-21 hurling teams were used on calendars, supported by advertisements, without the permission of the GAA authorities.

"If needs be, Kilkenny will pursue this issue all the way to the courts," insisted county chairman Ned Quinn.

Last year Kilkenny commissioned a new county GAA logo, which, when used on playing gear, meant reproductions were not allowed without permission of the county board. The original pictures of the teams had the logo on the jerseys, but it had been removed on the calendar shots.

"The way the pictures were used wasn't an accident," said county development officer Barry Hickey, who is in charge of the situation for the board.

"The profit from this venture was taken out of the county by an independent company who have no connection with Kilkenny hurling."

He added the county board didn't want to come across as "money grabbers", but they were entitled to protect the county teams' image rights.
