Gardai are treating as suspicious the death of a woman in Kilkenny city yesterday evening. Ms Christina Quinn, a 36-year-old divorcee, was found at her home in Greenfields Road, Freshford Road, just after 5 p.m.

A fire had broken out at the house. However, Supt Gordon Ryan, who is heading the investigation, said there were signs of injuries on the woman's body. It is thought she may have been stabbed.

Two local men were being questioned by gardaí last night.

The alarm was raised after a call to the emergency services at 5 p.m.

Two units of Kilkenny fire brigade responded and were still at the scene two hours later, having dealt with a minor blaze.

Ms Quinn was pronounced dead at the scene and was taken by ambulance the short distance to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny

The dead woman worked part-time as a waitress in Hotel Kilkenny. She was a member of the Connolly family from Stephen Street, Kilkenny.

The State Pathologist will carry out a post-mortem on her body later today at Waterford Regional Hospital.
