Killester have been awarded the ESB Men’s League after an appeal to the Irish Basketball National Executive Appeals Committee last night.
Killester appealed the decision to abandon the league, taken by the National Competitions Committee on March 7th due to cancellations caused by foot-and-mouth.
They also appealed the decision not to award the title to their club.
After submissions from Killester and the NCC, the appeals committee upheld the decision to abandon the league but awarded the 2001 title to Killester.
The committee reasoned that if all teams in contention at the abandonment had played 23 games (with wins being awarded to all but Killester), Killester would still be clear leaders.
Ninety per cent of the ESB Men’s League had been played when it was abandoned.
