A man who claimed to be the victim of a drive-by shooting along a rural US road while writing a book called Kindness of America has confessed to shooting himself, authorities have said.

Ray Dolin had said he was travelling through Montana when he was shot in the arm by a passing driver. But Valley County under-sheriff Vernon Buerkle said that Mr Dolin has now acknowledged that he shot himself.

Authorities believe he carried out the shooting as a desperate act of self-promotion.

No charges were immediately filed against Mr Dolin. The case remains under investigation, and Mr Buerkle says charges are possible.
