There’s a three-way tie at the top of Division One of the National Football League after wins for Galway, Derry and Kerry this afternoon. At Pearse Stadium, a ruthless first half performance from Galway gave them their first win over Dublin since 1980, while Kerry beat Tyrone in Omagh and Derry walloped Westmeath.
Michael Meehan (penalty), Sean Armstrong and Paul Conroy each claimed a goal in the first half for Galway, whose captain Padraig Joyce was in fine form.
The Tribesmen led 3-07 to 0-05 at halftime, Ciaran Whelan having pointed twice for the Dubs.
Bernard Brogan endeavoured to lead a Dublin revival in the second half but the homeside were well in charge at that stage and never looked like relinquishing their lead.
Kerry visited All-Ireland champions Tyrone and immediately proved unwelcome guests as they raced into a commanding lead by the break.
Colm Cooper hit the net twice in the first half and the Kingdom led by 2-08 to 0-03 at halftime.
Tyrone goalkeeper Jonathan Curran prevented further Kerry goals as Tyrone found their range and fought back to within three points, but it was too late in the day for heroics.
It was very convincing for Derry at Ballinascreen as they saw off Westmeath with a 14 point cushion.
Eoin and Paul Bradley were in fine form and combined with goalscorer Eoin Browne to send their side into a 0-09 to 0-05 lead at halftime.
In the end, the Bradley’s scored five each and, despite the best efforts of Denis Glennon and Dessie Dolan who grabbed three apiece, Westmeath could not keep up.
