Joe Kinnear has agreed to rejoin Luton as manager, according to the man who led the controversial takeover of the club. However, his return may depend on a fans telephone poll.
Kinnear was sacked by Luton last month, but Hatters managing director John Gurney claims the pair shook hands on a deal to reinstate him during a five-hour meeting on Sunday.
He said: "At the end of the meeting we shook hands on an agreement that Joe would come back on terms to be agreed with his agent this week.
"Until Joe's signed a contract nothing is agreed. Joe has shaken hands that he wants to come back. A draft contract has been drawn up."
Kinnear received a letter of dismissal from Luton last month signed by consultant Peter Miller following the takeover of the club by a mystery consortium.
Following Kinnear's departure, Luton offered fans the chance to vote for a new manager in a telephone poll.
Kinnear is on a shortlist of three which also includes Steve Cotterill and Mike Newell.
The Hatters intend to agree terms with all three candidates before making an appointment next week based on which of the three tops the final round of voting. Lines close at midnight on Saturday.
