A most unusual art installation forms part of the Cork 2005 European Capital of Culture events.
Called the Knitting Map, this large scale work is an ongoing observation of life in Cork city. A satellite view of the city is translated into a pattern for knitting stitches. The key for it is unusual, with intricate cable stitches equalling traffic at rush hour while bobbles represent people, and flat stocking stitch the calm of the city on Sunday mornings.
This enormous work will map the life of Cork city during each day of 2005, with the colours changing through the seasons.
During the installation, the knitters will work in relays of 50 people on a balcony above a central space and, as they knit, the finished work will fall down into the space below where people can view it.
