Berlin - The finance scandal involving the former German chancellor, Dr Helmut Kohl, is threatening to engulf his successor as leader of the Christian Democrats, Mr Wolfgang Schauble.
Leading politicians in the coalition of the Chancellor, Mr Gerhard Schroder, said Mr Schauble knew about an illicit 1.1 million mark cash payment Dr Kohl made to the CDU parliamentary group in 1997 when Mr Schauble was its leader.
