Kylie Minogue's surgery for early breast cancer has been successful, her surgeon said today.

Kylie Minogue's surgery for early breast cancer has been successful, her surgeon said today.

The star, who is surrounded by her friends and family and said to be "feeling fine", is expected to make a "complete recovery".

"I'm very pleased to be able to confirm that the operation was successful," said Dr Jenny Senior, who operated on Kylie yesterday afternoon at St Frances Xavier Cabrini Hospital in her home town of Melbourne. "I feel confident that we caught the cancer in time and that she is now on the road to complete recovery."

Dr Senior said: "Kylie has been the perfect patient and has charmed all my staff.

"I just wish I could have met her under happier circumstances."

She added: "Kylie is now resting after the operation and her spirits are high and she is feeling fine.

"She has her family and friends around her."

The surgeon thanked the star, her family and boyfriend Olivier Martinez for "making my job very easy". "They were so welcoming," she said.

"Finally, Kylie has asked me to pass on her thanks once again to all who have expressed their love and concern for her.

"Your support has certainly helped her through a tough time."

On Thursday the 36-year-old star's manager said early tests had shown that the cancer had not spread to other parts of her body. Kylie postponed the final leg of her showgirl tour after receiving the diagnosis while in Australia. She also announced she would be pulling out of her headline appearance at Glastonbury.

Earlier today a cancer charity official said fans of the cancer-stricken singer sent $8,000 Australian (€4,800) to a special fund set up by an Australian charity in its first 24 hours. The Cancer Council created the Kylie Minogue Breast Cancer Fund after the pop star announced she had breast cancer and urged fans to help finance research instead of sending her flowers and cards.

Meanwhile, Australia's Sky News reported that news teams camped outside the Minogue family home in Melbourne were pelted with eggs in the early hours of Saturday by a gang of masked youths. There were no injuries and police made no arrests.
