The Labour Party has appointed a former RTE political correspondent as its new communications director, it was confirmed today.

Liam Cahill, who will handle strategic communications for the party, takes up his new role on October 1 st.

Party leader Pat Rabbitte said: "Liam's skills would be an asset to any party and I am very pleased that his has come to work with the Labour Party. "I am also confident that the other changes I have made now leaves me with the strongest possible senior staff team working in Leinster House.

The party has also confirmed a number of other changes with Adrian Langan replacing Fergus Finlay as Chef de Cabinet.
