The midfielder initially agreed with Berti Vogts to stay on until the Euro 2004 qualifier with Germany.

But it appears that the 33-year-old will tell the Scotland coach that he wants to continue his international career and return to Dortmund to take on the Germans in September.

Gordon Smith said: "The situation is that the deal was always until the Germany game which was on Saturday.

"That was the arrangement he had with Berti Vogts and then he was going to review it after that depending on how Scotland were doing and the position they were in the group.

"You can see it yourself that Scotland have done pretty well and doing all right in the group and it might be the case of him extending it, and I think he will extend it".
