Celtic won their first match in Group E of the Champions League, hanging on a for a 1-0 victory over Portuguese side FC Porto at Parkhead tonight.

Henrik Larsson's ninth goal of the season in the 36th minute gave the home side a priceless win as they bounced back from the disappointment of their dramatic 3-2 reverse in Turin against Juventus.

Now Celtic can look forward to next month's return match in Portugal with renewed confidence.

But Celtic had their work cut out early on against an impressive Porto side and goalkeeper Rob Douglas had to make important saves towards the end of the match.

The international striker missed a corner swung in by Bobby Petta. But the ball bounced off his English strike partner Chris Sutton and Larsson was never going to miss from close range as he fired home.

Celtic could have calmed their fans' nerves with a second goal in the 48th minute when Didier Agathe's cross was missed by both Larsson and Petta.

Porto goalkeeper Ovchinnikov saved a header from Bobo Balde before diving fulll length to turn away a Paul Lambert free-kick.

But the visitors went close when Jorge Andrade's strike right-foot strike shaved the post. Celtic though hung on until the final whistle with a jubilant O'Neill leaping to his feet in the directors' box at full-time.
