The last batch of handbooks on the Lisbon Treaty are today being posted out as part of the Referendum Commission’s public information campaign on the 12th June referendum.

The handbook, called The Lisbon Treaty - Get the Complete Picture, is also available in local authority offices, public libraries, and third-level colleges across the State. It is published in Irish and English.

Speaking this morning, Referendum Commission Chairman Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O’Neill said: “This information is independent and impartial and will help the Irish people to inform themselves on the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty over the next three weeks.

“I believe voters will have enough information to allow them to understand the referendum proposal and we would urge them to come out and vote on June 12th.”

The commission also has a website, www.lisbontreaty2008.ie, that includes information on voting.

Last month, the body revealed a survey finding that 80 per cent of respondents said they did not understand the Treaty particularly well, or did not comprehend it at all.

The independent commission seeks to explain referendum proposals, promote public awareness of the referendum and encourage the electorate to vote.
