The last parent of Bloody Sunday victims has died. Lawrence McElhinney (84) died on Sunday. His son Kevin was 17 when he was shot dead by the British army in Derry in January 1972. Mr McElhinney was the only parent to live to see last June’s publication of the Saville report, which saw British prime minister David Cameron exonerate those who were shot. John Kelly, whose brother Michael was also a victim, said the death was “the end of an era”.
SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan said Mr McElhinney “epitomised the dignity and determination” of all the families.
“Sadly, he was the only parent of the victims to see justice and vindication achieved, and to hear last year’s open and full apology by the prime minister.
“I would like to express my sincere condolences to the McElhinney family at this very sad time.”
