A Latvian man has drowned after he was swept out to sea by a wave while fishing on the Co Clare coast today.

The man was hit by a wave as he was fishing with three friends at an area known as the Blue Pool, at Ballard Bay, just north of Kilkee, at around 1.20pm, a spokeswoman for the Department of Transport confirmed.

The Doolin and Kilkee marine rescue services, who were in the area searching for a Polish angler missing at sea since a similar incident last weekend, went to the scene and recovered the man's body.

It is understood the dead man's wife and eight-year-old son were nearby in a car at the time and witnessed the accident.

He was originally believed to be from Poland as the men he was with and who raised the alarm are Polish, a spokesman for Valentia coastguard said.

The spokesman confirmed the man's body had been recovered and removed to Kilkee.

Piotr Bedzlowicz (35) from Laskowice in northern Poland is still missing after he and a friend were swept off rocks at Tullig point while they were angling last Sunday afternoon.

Mr Bedzlowicz's friend was washed back onshore within minutes and managed to raise the alarm.

Aran and Fenit RNLI offshore lifeboats, the Kilkee and Doolin Coast Guard units, Kilkee rescue service, the Shannon helicopter and up to 40 sub-aqua divers have been involved in the ongoing search.

However, the search had to be scaled back due to bad weather last week.

The Department of Transport spokeswoman said the wind was at force four today when the accident happened, but that seas were very rough at the time.
