The Law Reform Commission was established by the 1975 Law Reform Commission Act and is an independent body consisting of a president and four other members by the Government. It has formulated and reports, 11 working papers nine consultation papers and annual reports.

The current commissioners are: its president, Mr Anthony J. Hederman, former judge of the Supreme Court; Judge John F. Buckley, of the Circuit Court; Prof William Duncan, barrister at law and professor of law and jurisprudence at Trinity College Dublin; Ms Maureen Gaffney, senior lecturer in psychology at Trinity College Dublin; and Mr Simon P. O'Leary, barrister at law.

Mr John Quirke is secretary to the commission, and its research assistants are Ms Sarah Farrell and Ms Lia O'Hegarty, both barristers at law.
