The Government has been urged to bring forward promised legislation to regulate inter-country adoptions in light of fears of a growing trade of babies on the Internet.

The Labour Party's spokeswoman on equality and law reform, Ms Jan O'Sullivan, said legislation had been promised for some time and should be introduced urgently.

"Marketing babies is exploitation of children at its worst. Those people who trade in babies, be it on the Internet or through an international cartel, should not be given space for trading here in Ireland," she said.
