The man who died when two cars crashed near Stonebridge on New Year's Eve was a prominent GAA figure in Co Armagh. Mr Barney McManus, a 76-year-old widower, of Railway Street in Armagh, may have taken ill before the impact, according to a close relative. "We don't really know what happened until the post-mortem," he added.

Mr McManus received the GAA's Hall of Fame award a few years ago in recognition of a lifetime of service to the sport in Co Armagh. He was actively involved with the developments carried out at the city's athletic grounds.

He had been sacristan of St Patrick's Cathedral for 30 years until his retirement 10 years ago. In public life he served for many years as an Independent councillor on Armagh District Council and the former Urban Council.

Mr McManus was predeceased by his wife, Josephine, who collapsed and died while attending a New Year's Day Mass in the cathedral eight years ago. He is survived by his son, Gerald, a solicitor.
