THE CLIPPER fleet arrived in Cork yesterday to the strains of Happy Birthday – a tribute to Cork skipper Hannah Jenner, who celebrated her 30th birthday last week.
With 10 Atlantic crossings under her belt, she is now poised to complete a full circumnavigation of the globe as part of the 35,000-mile Clipper Round the World Race.
The boats made their way from Kinsale, around Roches Point, passing Cobh, Passage West and finally Blackrock Castle on their way into the city, to dock at the purpose-built port of Cork City Marina at 5pm.
Hundreds lined the banks of the Lee as the boats cruised towards the city, led by Finland, followed by Jamaicaand Qingdao, Hull and Humber, California, Singapore, Edinburgh, and Cape Breton.
The crew of Cork, bringing up the rear, were treated to a heroes’ welcome at the race village erected on Albert Quay for the three-day festival.
On dry land, the crews were officially welcomed to Cork city by Lord Mayor Mick O’Connell and a prize-giving ceremony for Leg 12 of the race, from Cape Breton to Kinsale, followed.
Three days of celebrations are planned to coincide with the Clipper fleet arrival, with live music from local talents John Spillane, Fred and Crystal Swing along with street entertainment and some 60 food, retail and craft stalls daily until Friday.
