Down took their time but eventually ran out comfortable 2-16 to 0-13 winners against London in their National Hurling League Division 2B game at Pairc Esler in Newry this afternoon.
James Coyle scored the hosts opening goal after 15 minutes and it proved to be the only difference between the two sides at the interval (1-08 to 0-08).
Towards the closing stages of the game Down were still only a goal ahead and by no means assured of the expected victory. However, Gareth Johnson scored the all-important second goal after 67 minutes.
Paul Braniff was in good form and his personal tally of 0-6 ensured Down's nine-point win which takes the Mourne to the top of the table - overnight at least.
Elsewhere, Fermanagh were 0-14 to 1-07 winners against Limerick in their National Football League Division 3 encounter in Lisnaskea.
