Nairobi - Mr Richard Leakey was back yesterday in his old job as director of the Kenyan wildlife service, despite being vilified by President Daniel arap Moi as a "neo-colonialist."

Mr Leakey (54), a second-generation Kenyan of British descent whose parents, Louis and Mary, won worldwide fame as palaeontologists, is also an opposition member of parliament for the Safina (Noah's Ark) party.

Mr Leakey won renown for saving Kenya's elephants from poachers, but resigned as director of the wildlife service (KWS) in January 1994, citing a "campaign of vilification from politicians and senior civil servants".
