What can any tourist do to actively support local communities and the environment? Tourism Concern offers some guidelines for travellers, whether on eco-friendly or ordinary holidays.

1. Save precious natural resources Try not to waste water and always switch off lights and air-conditioning.

2. Buy local. Buy locally made souvenirs (but avoid anything made from coral, ivory, skins of other wildlife). Drinking locally produced drinks gives money to local people, drinking Pepsi or Coke gives money to Western corporations.

4. Recognise tribal land rights. Even if the national government does not. Only visit tribal people on tours they endorse. If you are in doubt about whether you are welcome in a tribal community, don't go.

5. Always ask before photographing or videoing people.

6. Don't give money or sweets to children It encourages begging and demeans children. A donation to a local community project, school or health centre is preferable.

7. Respect local etiquette. In many countries, loose clothes are preferable to shorts and skimpy tops.

8. Learn a little of the local language, history and current affairs of a country. It prevents misunderstandings and frustrations.
