Montevideo - Hundreds of Uruguayans queued outside polling booths yesterday to vote for a new president, senate and congress, Michael McCaughan reports. Mr Tabare Vazquez, candidate for the left-wing Frente Amplio (FA), or Broad Front, looked relaxed and confident when he arrived to vote in Belvedere neighbourhood.
The charismatic former mayor of Montevideo was, as expected, ahead in exit polls late last night. He had steadily increased his ratings in the run-up to election day. The Broad Front, a coalition of socialists and left-wing groups, is the favourite to win the presidential vote, but will face a second round run-off at the end of November.
