Prague - Czechs began voting yesterday in a two-day general election expected to give the left at least a share in power for the first time since the fall of communism. The opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) are expected to emerge as the biggest of the 17 parties on the ballot papers.
The local media have made much of a leaked letter from President Vaclav Havel to former prime minister Mr Vaclav Klaus, in which the President suggested that Mr Milos Zeman, the CSSD leader, was exhausted and might not want to be premier.
