Matt Williams, whose side were beaten in the Heineken Cup semi-finals last month, has wasted little time strengthening what was perceived to be the weakest area of his side, signing the 25-year-old on a four-year deal.

Contepomi joins from English side Bristol Shoguns, who are in the throws of a mass exodus following their relegation from the Zurich Premiership. Contepomi had also been linked with both Gloucester and Sale but opted for a long-term move to Dublin where he will attend UCD to continue his medical studies.

Leinster were criticised for having too few options at number 10 in the wake of their European exit, particularly the lack of a tactical kicking out-half. Clontarf's Andy Dunne had been touted as the future but following the news of his impending move to Harlequins, it emerged that Contepomi was William's first choice.

The Puma has been capped 29 times for his country, scoring a total of 190 points in the process. Indeed, he is expected to play a crucial role in the Puma's World Cup clash with Ireland in Adelaide this October.

Leinster have also confirmed the signings of John Lyne, Gavin Hickie, Niall Treston, Ben Gissing, Shane Jennings, Niall Breslin, Matt Leek, Kieran Lewis and James Norton on full contracts.

However, the signing of Contepomi means there is no longer a place at Donnybrook for former first choice Nathan Spooner. The Australian missed most of last season through injury and loses out as Williams reshuffles his deck.

Liam Toland and Adam Magro have also been told their contracts are not to be renewed, while Ben Willis and Simon Keogh will join Dunne at the Stoop next season.
