Athens - The mayor of a coastal resort on the Greek island of Mitilini, also known as Lesbos, is seeking to prevent a visit to the island this week by a group of 100 British lesbians.
Mr Polydoras Abatzis, mayor of Eressos, said British advertising for the trip, describing his town as "a paradise of gay love", had damaged the resort's image. He said he had asked for a court injunction to bar the lesbian group from visiting the Aegean island. A ruling is expected today.
In antiquity, Mitilini was the island of the poetess Sappho, whose verse celebrated love between females.
