GERRIT Isenborger wrote to the President, Mrs Robinson, outlining his grievances concerning eviction, according a neighbour, Mr Tony Martin.

Mr Martin said he understood that Mr Isenborger had received a reply from the President, but he was not told what this letter said.

Mr Martin, who helped Mr Isenborger dig the foundations of the Bawnboy house, said the German felt the legal system here had failed him, even though he had used it to the full extent.

Mr lsenborger lost a claim for £30,000 in damages against the farm's owner, Mr Michael Hehle, last October. The claim was for breach of contract, and work and services provided.

Before moving to Ireland, Mr Isenborger lived on farms and ranches in Canada. He was reported also to have lived in an Indian settlement.

He moved to Ireland in 1980 and lived in Roscommon, Sligo and Galway before moving to Bawnboy, Co Cavan, in 1994.

Mr Isenberger's terminally ill mother was rarely seen in Bawnboy. She was described by one local who met her as a tall, elegant and grey haired woman who spoke little English.
