A MAN has died after he was struck by a car while on duty in Limerick. Damien Parker (39), Oakwood, Singland, Limerick, a postman, was on his bicycle when he was hit by a car on the Ennis Road at 11.25am.

The father of two was coming out of an estate opposite the Greenhills Hotel when the collision occurred with a passing vehicle. Mr Parker was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital with serious injuries where he died yesterday shortly after 2.30pm.

The driver of the car was uninjured.

A stretch of the Ennis Road from the Coonagh roundabout to Caherdavin Lawn was closed off to traffic from both directions for a number of hours following the incident.

The chief executive of An Post, Donal Connell, said he was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic death of Mr Parker, who is survived by his wife Majella and five-year-old twin daughters.

“Our thoughts are with Damien’s family, particularly his wife Majella, his two young children and his An Post colleagues in Limerick,” Mr Connell said. “This tragedy has shocked all those who knew or worked with Damien.

“It is particularly tragic that Damien was killed in the course of his job delivering the mail to the people of Limerick. He was just 39 years of age and had worked for An Post for the past nine years. May he rest in peace.”

A technical examination of the area was carried out by forensic collision investigators and the road was closed for some hours.
