A man in his early 30s who survived a murder attempt on Sunday night in a Limerick suburb is now in a stable condition, a spokeswoman at Limerick Regional Hospital said yesterday.
The man remains in intensive care after receiving gunshot wounds and has not yet undergone surgery.
He has been named as Mr Kenny Griffin (33), from Collins Avenue, a father of three.
Gardai believe a feud between families is behind the attack on the man, who was sitting in his car outside his home at 9.30 p.m. when a person with a shotgun fired on him.
"He was approached by a lone gunman on foot wearing a balaclava who discharged two shots from a shotgun, and he was hit in the face and the side," Supt Willie Keane of Roxburo Garda station said.
An appeal for witnesses to come forward has been made after the attacker escaped in a silver car, believed to have been driven by an accomplice.
Supt Keane added that the theory that the attack was feud-related was being investigated. Two separate incidents which are understood to have involved the same feuding parties occurred earlier this month when shots were fired and one person was injured.
A Garda source said there have been ongoing incidents involving the two feuding families dating back more than 10 years when a member of one lost her eye after being assaulted. Since then, a series of tit-for-tat attacks has ensued and has spread to families related by marriage.
