The man who confessed to killing Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh is likely to be put in a mental institution rather than serve life in prison after being found mentally ill by psychiatrists.

The National Health Board said today that 25-year-old Mijailo Mijailovic was mentally disturbed when he stabbed Ms Lindh in a Stockholm department store last September, contradicting an earlier test that said Mijailovic was in command of his senses.

Ms Lindh, a 46-year-old mother of two who was tipped as Sweden's next prime minister, died a day after the attack.

The board put Mijailovic under 24-hour observation for a week in its forensic psychiatry unit, revealing mental disorders which had not been detected before the trial. The Health Board sent its conclusion, which was not unanimous, to the appeals court yesterday. The appeal hearing begins on June 28th.

If the appeals court agrees with the health board, Mijailovic will be kept in a mental institution until he is no longer considered a threat to society.
