Eight Lithuanian football fans who arrived on a flight with their national team have been barred from entering Britain by immigration officials.

The fans were accompanying their team on a chartered flight which landed at Glasgow yesterday. Lithuania are due to play Scotland in a European Championship qualifier at Hampden Park tomorrow.

The eight fans were among a group of 24 travelling supporters checked by officers after arriving at the airport.

Of these, 20 were refused immediate entry and four others allowed to go on.

After further questioning, officials detained eight fans until Sunday when the flight returns to Lithuania.

The remaining 12 fans will be free to watch the game after being granted temporary admission pending their removal.

None of the 18-man Lithuanian squad were among the people questioned.

UK immigration officers have previously stopped illegal immigrants posing as football fans from trying to get into the country .
