Liverpool, playing without the guidance of manager Gerard Houllier, beat Dynamo Kiev 2-1 tonight, all but ending the Ukrainian side's already slim chances of progress from Champions League group B.

Kiev stay rooted at the bottom of the group while Liverpool go top - a boost for Liverpool manager Houllier recovering in hospital after heart surgery.

Danny Murphy opened the scoring for the visitors in the 43rd minute, converting a neat pass from Steven Gerrard. Tiberiu Ghioane equalised in the 59th minute but Gerrard sealed victory eight minutes later after beating two defenders and firing home from the edge of the area.

In Group C a double strike from France international Thierry Henry helped Arsenal revive their faltering Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win over Greek giants Panathinaikos at Highbury earlier.

Arsene Wenger's men were a goal ahead at half-time but were pegged back five minutes after the break. England centre-back Sol Campbell back-headed a cross that fell to striker Emmanuele Olisadebe on the left edge of the box.

He turned Lauren inside out before his shot surprisingly beat Wright at the near post, although the ball was deflected by Campbell.

But barely two minutes later Arsenal were back in front. Sylvain Wiltord burst into the area and the striker was shoved to the ground by Panathinaikos' Sotiris Kirgiakos.

Swiss referee Urs Meier immediately awarded a penalty and Henry calmly steered the ball past Greece goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis.
