Blackburn Rovers 2 Liverpool 2

Substitute Corrado Grabbi struck with a bullet header seconds after coming on to salvage a 2-2 draw for unbeaten Rovers in a highly entertaining match.

Rovers manager Graeme Souness was sent off towards the end after confronting the referee following a challenge by Liverpool substitute Emile Heskey on one of his players.

England Under-21 midfielder David Dunn opened the scoring for the home side in the 16th minute with a cracking left foot shot after a neat dummy by striker Andy Cole.

Liverpool pulled level in the 31st minute when Danny Murphy took Abel Xavier's return pass on the run and swept the ball into the net from 18 metres.

Gerard Houllier's side went in front when substitute Vladimir Smicer crossed from the left for John Arne Riise, who produced a superb looping header from the back post.

The result lifted Liverpool into second place level on seven points with leaders Arsenal and third-placed Tottenham.

Leeds United 0 Sunderland 1

Sunderland snatched their first win of the season as Leeds, who won their opening two matches under new manager Terry Venables, slid to a surprise home defeat.

Republic of Ireland midfielder Jason McAteer was the goalscorer, pouncing from close range in the 46th minute with a left foot shot.

Aston Villa 1 Manchester City 0

Graham Taylor's side grabbed their first points - and goal - of the season, courtesy of a second half strike by England forward Darius Vassell.

Vassell's shot flew into the turf and bounced over City keeper Peter Schmeichel.

Villa had the better of a poor first half with towering striker Peter Crouch twice going close.

Everton 1 Birmingham City 1

Everton maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a last-minute goal as City registered their first point following their return to the top flight.

A niggling match erupted in the 50th minute when Everton defender Alan Stubbs was sent off for a challenge in the penalty area on Stern John after a dreadful backpass by Thomas Gravesen.

John brushed himself off to convert the resulting penalty. City looked set to take all three points but in the dying seconds David Unsworth's drive crashed back off the post and rebounded into the net off a Birmingham defender.

Southampton 1 Chelsea 1

Southampton broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Fabrice Fernandes curled an excellent left foot shot into the bottom right of the goal from 22 metres.

Chelsea, who struggled to find their rhythm for most of the match, equalised 10 minutes from time through Frank Lampard who chipped Saints keeper Paul Jones after a well-timed run into the box.

Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was substituted at the interval after a sub-standard first half display but his replacement Eidur Gudjohnsen missed two good chances.
