Liverpool fans will give their side a heroes send-off to the Champions League Final knowing they are watching the end of an era.

Whatever this current squad have achieved in reaching the May 25th final in Istanbul against AC Milan, it has not been enough to satisfy boss Rafael Benitez.

The squad Anfield watches tomorrow against Aston Villa in the final game of the Barclays Premiership season, could have changed out of all recognition by the time the fans next see their team play a league match in August.

Benitez will spend the summer sorting out an under-achieving squad, and as many as 12 players could be on their way out of Anfield with an equal number on the way in.

Benitez explained: "It is clear we have not got the squad to be able to compete for three major trophies. Next season our aim is to have enough quality players to be able to do so."

Benitez will rest Steven Gerrard, Luis Garcia and maybe Jamie Carragher against Villa and will give Djibril Cisse the chance to start the match and stake a claim to lead the attack in Turkey.

Elsewhere, several players could be saying their farewells - Vladimir Smicer is surplus to requirements and Harry Kewell, Dietmar Hamann, Milan Baros and Jerzy Dudek could find themselves in a similar position.

Other players could find themselves shipped out, with Benitez continuing: "We are working towards the new season, we are working for the next game and we are working for the final.

"That is my responsibility as a manager. All I can say is that I want good players coming here next season, good enough for us. I am very happy with the Carling final and the Champions League final, but I am not happy with our away form.

"I am learning and we know we must change things in the future, particularly when we play away in the league."

He added: "When you change clubs as a manager in Spain you learn things, obviously. But when you change your club, your country and your language there is a lot more to learn. I have tried to learn as soon as possible and I am confident that next season many things will be different.

"I am sure we will be better next season, you cannot win trophies and lose so any away games. We must work on playing as well away as we do at home.  I am happy here when we win, but very disappointed when we don't. When I signed the contract I said I want to win games and that it is a challenge.

"Now I want to win the final and then to start preparing the team for next season when I know a lot of things will be different."

Benitez praised Carragher, Sami Hyypia, John Arne Riise, Djimi Traore and Steve Finnan for their play this term.

But he added: "The supporters can see a lot of players have done well, others have shown potential for the future - but some of them know they can do better.  Our job is to get maximum from everyone."
