Liverpool won the UEFA Cup tonight, and their third trophy of the season with a 5-4 golden goal victory over Spanish side Alaves.

In a remarkable match, the two sides swopped periods of domination to produce one of the most scintillating cup finals in football history.

Liverpool went into the break 3-1 up after goals from Babbel, Gerrard and McAllister from the spot for Liverpool, and an Alaves goal from Ivan Alonso.

After the break, Liverpool were stunned with a quick double-strike from Alaves' Javi Moreno inside the first six minutes, to tie the game at 3-3.

Late goals from substitute Robbie Fowler and former Man Utd player, Jordi Cruyff sent the game nervously towards extra time.

Alaves' cause was not helped in extra time with the sending off of Magno and team captain Karmona. Indeed it was the free-kick that resulted from Karmona's sending off that saw Liverpool triumphant.

Gary McAllister sent in a curling cross that was headed into his own goal by the unfortunate Alaves midfielder, Delfi Geli.
