Local authorities are set to get €6 million in funding to help with the costs of running recycling facilities.

Local authorities are set to get €6 million in funding to help with the costs of running recycling facilities.

The Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, announced the extra money to help with the escalating costs associated with bring banks and civic amenity facilities incurred over the period January to June 2007.

Grant allocations will be based on a combination of weighted tonnage and net operating costs.

The Minister called on the local authorities to continue to provide the waste management infrastructure that is needed to deal with it in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

"It is clear that Irish people are willing to act collectively in tackling our waste issues and will use recycling facilities when they are provided," he said.
