Plans by Cranberries star Dolores O'Riordan to build a lavish home near her Co Limerick birthplace have led to objections from local residents.

A planning application lodged by the singer's husband, Don Burton, through Stanhope Developments, seeks permission to build a dwelling house and stables at Riverfield, Kimallock, Co Limerick.

The proposed development would be situated on a two-acre site, which previously formed part of a stud farm sold to the celebrity couple for €4.5 million two years ago.

Locals objecting to the planning application claim it was their understanding that the site in question was to be used for farming, with one couple claiming that this had a "huge influence" on their decision to buy in the area.

Another local opposed to the proposed development says he would strongly question whether or not the couple intend to live in the new house.

He also claims that the new development would attract additional traffic to a "quiet stretch of road".

It is understood other locals have pointed out that they have been refused planning permission for one-off housing in the area.

Meanwhile, Limerick County Council officials have written to O'Riordan and her husband asking them to prove they have lived locally for at least a decade and that they intend to use the property as a "primary residence".

They have also been asked to show whether or not there is any commercial aspect to their proposal.
