Looney resigns as Irish Examiner editor

The editor of the Irish Examiner newspaper today resigned his position to pursue other interests.

The editor of the Irish Examinernewspaper today resigned his position to pursue other interests.

Mr Brian Looney joined the newspaper as editor in 1994. He will be replaced by Mr Tim Vaughan, who had been the assistant editor.

Examiner Publications Ltd chief executive Mr Padraig Mallon praised Mr Looney's commitment and contribution to the developing the Irish Examinerbrand. Under Mr Looney's editorship, circulation increased by 20 per cent and profitability had grown significantly, he said.

Company chairman Mr Alan Crosbie said: "Brian has been instrumental in the dramatic changes made to the Irish Examinerin the latter half of the 1990s.His contribution to the organisation has been significant and I wish him success in the next phase of his career."
