Kinshasa - Looters set about Congo's capital, Brazzaville, after strongman, Denis Sassou Nguesso, seized back power, a French diplomat said yesterday, while oil giant, Elf, resumed normal work in Pointe Noire.

Gangs roamed the largely deserted city and set up a stolen goods' market there, according to a diplomat contacted by AFP in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the far bank of the Congo River.

Meanwhile, supporters of Congo's toppled president, Mr Pascal Lissouba, yesterday controlled the town of Dolisie where he has taken refuge and were refusing to let French nationals leave, an independent source said.
