Racing: Lord Admiral hung on grimly to record a noteworthy Group Three success in the Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown this evening.

The six-year-old — running in the colours of the great Vincent O'Brien and trained by his son, Charles — raced on the shoulder of leader Duff from the outset and kicked for home just over a furlong out.

The gambled-on favourite Modeeroch tried hard to reel him in, but Mick Kinane's mount, a 12-1 chance, had snatched a winning advantage and held Jim Bolger's charge at bay by a head.

Lord Admiral was recording just his third success from 33 starts, and his first in Pattern company.

The winning trainer said: "It was a long time coming, although in fairness he doesn't know how to run a bad race. The only one he has run was at Gowran last time, but that was my fault as it was right-handed.

"He always tries his heart out, but things have to fall right for him. We'll stick to here or anywhere that goes left-handed."
