MORE than 60 freight vehicles, many carrying perishable goods, were stranded at Rosslare Harbour, Co Wexford, for eight hours yesterday after arriving on morning ferries.

A double line of articulated lorries in the centre of the approach road effectively blocked freight movements in and out of the harbour from early morning.

The drivers said they were acting in sympathy with their colleagues at Dublin Port and would stay until there was a breakthrough in the dispute there.

The blockade at Rosslare was lifted in mid afternoon when the drivers learned that the protest in Dublin had been suspended pending talks.

Earlier, they had indicated that they did not intend to disrupt passenger traffic at the port. Emergency services, coaches, buses and cars were allowed to filter through the blockade.

Among the vehicles held up in the port after arriving there yesterday morning was a vehicle carrier with a number of US style military jeeps. They were being brought to Curracloe, Co Wexford, for use in action scenes for the Steven Spielberg film Saving Private Ryan, due to begin shooting later this month.
