Los Alamos - The Los Alamos nuclear weapons laboratory in New Mexico was evacuated yesterday as a forest fire raged perilously close to the top-secret US facility.
Schools in Los Alamos were also closed and about 500 homes in the area evacuated as a precaution, officials said. "Right now the fire is uncomfortably close to the lab," said a spokesman, Mr John Bass.
"We don't know exactly what the fire is going to do because the weather is what's driving the fire."
