Lost Macken stories published

A book of Walter Macken's short stories which had been lost for almost two generations went on sale yesterday. They had remained buried in his papers dispatched to Germany a quarter of a century ago.

The author's son, Ultan, had a hunch that some of his father's early stories were unpublished. He went to Wuppertal University and worked through his father's papers to find them.

City of the Tribes is published this week by Brandon Books, 30 years to the day after Macken died. According to Mr Steve MacDonagh of Brandon Books, it represents "an outstanding rediscovery of a wonderful Irish author at the height of his powers.
