A LOUTH man has consented to his extradition to Spain to serve a two-year sentence for the manslaughter of his wife.
Spanish authorities had sought the extradition of Michael Dermot McArdle (41), Brookfield, Heynestown, Dundalk, to serve a two-year sentence for causing the death of Kelly Ann Corcoran more than 10 years ago.
The mother of two died from injuries sustained when she fell from a hotel balcony after a “row, argument and struggle” with her husband while on a family holiday in Marbella on the Costa del Sol on February 11th, 2000.
McArdle was due to hand himself in to the Spanish authorities to begin his jail sentence in September of last year, but failed to do so. He was arrested in January on foot of a European arrest warrant issued by a Spanish judge.
Senior counsel Hugh Hartnett, for McArdle, told the High Court yesterday that his client wished to consent to his extradition to Spain. Taking to the stand, McArdle said he understood the reason why his surrender was being sought and agreed that he had been provided with professional legal advice on the matter.
McArdle also told Mr Justice John Edwards that he understood the consequences of his surrender.
