The Gaelic Players Association today entered into a seven figure sponsorship deal with Opel, the car manufacturers.

The deal is another significant initiative brokered by the players body of which the immediate centrepiece is the newly formed Opel Gaelic Player awards.

GPA chief executive Dessie Farrell also confirmed his association would address the player welfare through Government grants issue at its emergency general meeting in Portlaoise on Saturday.

The meeting has been called in response to what the GPA sees as the GAA's lack of co-operation with them over the introduction of grants and other player welfare issues.

Players are, according to Farrell, "incensed" with the lack of dialogue from headquarters.

Farrell's organisation "does not accept the slow rate of progress" on the grants proposal.

The GAA has postponed discussions on the players grant scheme until incoming president Nickey Brennan begins his term next month.

Brennan has reportedly indicated he will meet with the GPA in May.

Minister for Sport, John O'Donoghue, has shelved the grants issue until the GAA sends a representative for discussions.
